What to Expect on Your Halibut Charter

Join us aboard The Mighty Wolf Eel for an exciting private Alaskan halibut fishing adventure! We offer private-only halibut charters ranging from 4-hour half-day trips to longer 6-hour and full 8-hour excursions, with room for up to 6 guests maximum per U.S. Coast Guard regulations. We provide all rods, reels, bait, tackle, safety equipment, snacks, and soft drinks, and no experience is necessary — we are happy to help anglers of all skill levels.

Most halibut fishing takes place in deeper water using heavy-duty gear and bait setups designed to target these powerful flatfish near the ocean floor. When a fish is hooked, get ready for a fun battle — larger halibut can put up an incredible fight! Once landed, your catch is cleaned, and guests also have the option to have fish professionally processed and shipped home through a local third-party processor. Along the way, it is common to enjoy incredible Alaska scenery and wildlife sightings including whales, sea lions, bald eagles, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big do halibut get in Juneau?

Pacific halibut in Southeast Alaska range from smaller “chickens” in the 10 to 40-pound range up to fish exceeding 200 pounds. Most sport-caught fish run 20 to 80 pounds. Landing a true barn-door halibut is a bucket-list moment — and it happens on these waters every season.

What is the halibut bag limit in Alaska?

Current Southeast Alaska charter regulations allow anglers to retain one halibut per person per day. Retained fish must either be under 34 inches or over 80 inches in length to comply with current conservation regulations. In addition, halibut retention is closed on Thursdays during the regulated season this year. Regulations can change annually, and your captain will always have the most current rules and updates available before and during your trip so guests know exactly what to expect.

Do I need a fishing license for halibut?

Yes. All anglers age 16 and older must have a valid Alaska sport fishing license before fishing for halibut. Licenses are not included with the charter but can easily be purchased online through the Alaska Department of Fish & Game prior to your trip. In addition, each angler age 18 and older intending to retain halibut must also have a Federal Halibut Permit, which is available on our website at the time of booking and also available onboard during the trip.

Can we keep and take home our catch?

Absolutely! Guests are welcome to keep any legal halibut retained during the trip within current regulations. Your catch will be cleaned after the charter, and many guests choose to use a local professional fish processor who can vacuum seal, freeze, box, and even ship fish home directly to your destination for an additional fee.

Is halibut fishing good for beginners?

Yes. Halibut fishing is primarily bottom fishing with straightforward techniques. Your guide walks you through everything on board. The reward — pulling a big fish from deep water — is something every angler should experience at least once.
